    • Why are there not more arched roofs on tiny houses? they are stronger, use less material and offer more space than flat and pointy roofs. Are there any seasoned tiny house builders that could shed some light on this subject please? …

    • I will be building my tiny house in the coming spring 2014. One of my requirements is the house is strong enough to be very mobile. Camping, visiting family, touring the country etc... It will see many places. Anyway, I've been worried about a wooden house being moved around a lot so I am thinking about welding some steel posts the the trailer bed to give the house some structural stability. I und…

    • Well, I noticed nobody has posted here yet, so I'm going to.I've been considering options for insulating a tiny house (mobile). There's Rock Wool, recycled blue jeans, spray foam like they use on Holmes on Homes and Holmes Inspection (I think it's called Eco Walltight), and of course your standard fiberglass. I've ruled out loose insulation (like cellulose - blown in, and raw wool - like i…

    • Hello Tiny Home enthusiasts! I have a question about trailer selection. Has anyone built on an enclose trailer before?I was looking at an add for a trailer and it was a car hauler (an enclosed trailer) that they were selling for cheap since the roof had been damaged. Evidently I don't need the roof or the walls and I would have a full inspection done so that there were no surprises but I am un…

    • Hi everyone,I'm just wondering how everyone constructed their showers. I would need to build mine inside due to the winters here. I also don't want to use the traditional shower installs. I would ideally like to make my own tray, by using a stainless steal tray and somehow put wood bars on top so it's cozy on my toes then have the two sides that are up against walls maybe stainless steel s…

    • Hi all, hopefully some of you with building experience can put my mind at ease. Or validate my unease. We are about to start construction of a heavily modified Calpella Cabin. In the original plans the ridge board is a 20' 2x4 (or two shorter ones spliced together). Most other plans I've seen have a 2x6 or 4x4. I think I've even seen sandwiched 2x4s. I know there is a difference between a "…

    • I am looking for advice on trailer selection.Finding a suitable, affordable trailer has been difficult without much in the way of trailers in good condition or large enough for a home.  What I recently found though is a brand new 7'x18' flatbed trailer at a price I can afford, BUT it only has a GVW of 7,000 pounds which actually comes out to a carrying capacity of 5500 to 5200 pounds.…

    • Hi Folks.I'm new to the Tiny House movement and am here as an intrigued observer.I have an Airstream trailer which I've had for some years.  It's newer and I've only done a little customization on it.  I also have a pickup camper from the early 1970s where I'm more engaged in maintenance and modifications.  I've learned a thing or two about effective utilization of s…

My wife and I are in the process of designing a tiny home, but it will be a while before we can pay cash for the land. • Hi,I am trying to decide which wood burning stove to buy for my 8x20 ft. Tiny house. I really like the morso 1410 but wonder if it might be overkill. I also like the hobbit marine stove. • I admit, the house I'm planning won't be tiny, just very small (360-500'sq). I would like to skip the dryer completely and hang my clothes out in the summer and on warmer days. But there is that dead of winter time that I won't want to handle damp clothes outdoors. Any ideas on a way to make a single or double drying rack in the shower area? I'm also interested in a way to conceal the…

I found this on another forum and thought i should post it on here and share this tool.Homestyler is intended to be used by people building floorplans as it has no technical drawings built in to it for the structure. Attached are a couple of my ideas, I would like this to become a thread based around this software for sharing drawings.

    • I've seen some sources recommend using tension ties at the corners and every six feet in between (for mobile tiny houses, that is). However, it seems tension ties are designed to be anchored to concrete. I'm not sure how to attach it to my trailer, or if it really even makes sense to do so. Thoughts?…

    • I have the opportunity to buy and extensively remodel a 12x30 park model cabin. $5500 including relocation to my preferred lot. It once had a garage entrance on one side. It is wired and has a heat/AC wall unit, but there's no plumbing. Steel roof. Insulated. Interior walls are metal. There are nnterior walls, its all one open space now. Flat ceiling, not vaulted. Land, foundation, and house would…

    • This may sound like a strange question, but in a house on a foundation, is there any reason why the plumbing shouldn't be on an outer wall? Seemed like I read somewhere that plumbing should be more central in a house so the pipes wouldn't freeze. But that doesn't make sense since it still has to come into the house somewhere. My 12x30 house will be on county water and sept…

    • I have been wondering if someone has has used a 20 ft container as a trailer by welding on a tung and axles.

I think this would probably lower the structural integrity of the container some but even if it was halved its well over the maximum i have ever heard of a tiny house weighing.

Seems to me that a high cube container could just have the top cut out and a roof
